A Note from our Director – August 2017

The Sarpy Speakeasy, the museum’s annual fundraiser dinner event is only a few days away. There is still time to for us to save a seat for you. If you plan to attend, I would encourage you to reach out to me at the museum as soon as possible. As you probably could tell, the theme of the fundraiser this year is prohibition to spotlight the one hundredth anniversary of the enactment of prohibition in Nebraska. The battle between the “wets vs drys” would eventually lead to a federal ban on alcohol through the 18th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the subsequent Volstead Act. Al Capone, Tom Dennison, the Untouchables, moonshine, and bathtub gin are just a few of the slices of history associated with this era.
This event is the major fundraiser of the year for the organization. The funds raised from this our August Sarpy Speakeasy reverberate, allowing the museum to do many of the wonderful things throughout the year. Education programs, exhibits, historic preservation, and youth education to name just a few. If you’re silently telling yourself, “that’s nice but what do I get out of it?” that’s ok. This year, the food will be provided by Fareway Grocery, known for their high quality meats. The entertainment Three Day Weekend, a local jazz combo will highlight the music of the era and American jazz standards. The raffle items this year as in years past are abundant. Sports tickets, gift baskets, a variety of gift cards and event passes, and all sorts of high end gifts are available to be yours for one dollar a chance. I hope you’ll consider joining us as we celebrate our local history while we have fun, eat a good meal, hear quality live music, and hopefully win an item at the raffle.

See you at the museum & the annual fundraiser dinner!
