There is culture in Sarpy County and the museum does its share to provide it. April offered the extremely high quality program of Steve Tamayo, Native American artist and cultural historian. He spent his Sunday afternoon with us, sharing his knowledge of buffalo robes and tanning, Native symbolism, providing in-sight into the museum’s Native American artifacts, and sharing a story about how his art connected him with Willie Nelson. With his wisdom and his passion for the subject matter, it is clear to see why Tamayo was the 2014 recipient of the Governor’s Heritage Arts Award.
Our next program will be on June 5th and coincides with this year’s annual quilt exhibit. Jeanie York will share stories about the men and women who helped shape Nebraska’s early quilt history and further demonstrate quilting as a method of recording family history. We’re able to host these and many other programs and activities throughout the year, almost all of which are free of charge due to the generosity of our member-ship and the community.
If you would like to support these activities and many more, I would encourage you to take part in May 25th’s Omaha Gives! Donations can be made for as little as $10 and the Omaha Community Foundation will provide additional funds to match your donation. You even have the ability to make the do-nation ahead of time rather than waiting or forgetting about it on May 25th. As a small organization, the Sarpy County Museum is lucky this type of program exists and that we are allowed to participate.
