Plans for Expansion

Introducing the “Celebrating Human Ingenuity in the Heartland” Expansion Campaign

The new facility will feature increased exhibit space, enhanced educational offerings, and improved research and storage capability.

It is envisioned that the new Sarpy County Museum will have the potential to become a top ten destination in the greater Omaha area with expanded interactive displays including educational themes of agriculture, military, transportation and early residents and historical community growth.

The Sarpy County Museum invites you to be a pioneer – an early supporter – as we plan for a major expansion of the museum and its facilities. Please join us as we build a new Sarpy County Museum with increased exhibit space, improved accessibility, and enhanced interactive displays on agriculture, the military, transportation, early residents, and historical community growth.

Why is the Sarpy County Museum Moving/Expanding?

The Sarpy County Museum’s current location is isolated in a residential neighborhood, on a dead-end street immediately next to Offutt Air Force Base, preventing future expansion.

The new building will include space for the current materials held by the Sarpy County Museum, the addition of the Wimmer Railroad Collection, rotating display space, support space and proper museum storage. Location considerations also include accessibility, walkability, parking capacity, and outdoor surroundings.

An awe-inspiring private railroad collection has been gifted to the Sarpy County Museum. Bill Wimmer’s 50-year career in the railroad industry provide many opportunities to gather various railroad memorabilia and artifacts to create an extensive railroad collection.

The collection is currently cramped in 5,000 square foot facility 30 miles south of Omaha. When the collection is moved to the new Sarpy County Museum, it will have a museum staff to care for it and share it with the public.
